Scouring around different shapes of bridge pier

چکیده

Abstract Scouring is a complex process dependent on several factors, and local scour more than general scour. This study was an attempt to predict round bridge piers based in the water stream. Three obstacle shapes were used – circular, round-nosed, elliptical as they are predominant hydraulic structures like piers. For each shape, depth measured around periphery for five gradually increasing discharges two types of bed material. The results analyzed relate them Lacey's equation estimate Models developed three common shapes, by which any particular shape can be predicted

Local Scouring around a Circular Pier in Open Channel

Local scour around a cylindrical pier in a channel with an erodible bed or natural bed is a common problems in bridge or pile supported structure. The highly unsteady complex flow field around a circular pier produces scour hole mainly for the presence of vortices. The main mechanism that drives the formation and evolution of the scour hole around bridge pier is horse shoe vortex motion. In the...

Experimental comparison of sacrificial piles and submerged vanes as scour countermeasures around bridge pier

An experimental study has been conducted on the effectiveness of two types of flow-altering countermeasures placed around a cylindrical pier under clear water condition, which include sacrificial piles and submerged vanes. Their arrangements follow the optimal configurations recommended in the published articles with some modification. The temporal evolution of maximum scour depth and its equil...

Investigating Effect of Netted Collars on Scouring Around Bridge Piers Using Flow-3D

The present study used Flow-3D to investigate the effect of installing netted collars with different shapes on bridge piers. The results showed that installing netted triangular, circular, square, and rectangular collars with a hole diameter of 0.1 (d/D) reduced scouring by 49.5, 52.2, 52.7, and 56.5 percent, respectively, compared to the case with no collars. A hole diameter of 0.15 (d/D) for ...

Numerical Simulation of Flow Pattern around the Bridge Pier with Submerged Vanes

Bridges are very important for establishing communication paths. For this reason, it is important to control scour around bridge piers. Several methods have been proposed for scour control. One of the most useful methods is the use of submerged vanes. In the other hand, laboratory circumstances force many considered effective factors to be skipped in the scour phenomenon. In this situation, the...
